Metal corrodes when it reacts with another substance such as oxygen, hydrogen or bacteria. Corrosion can also happen when metals are placed under too much stress causing the material to crack. Corrosion leads to deterioration of the material. The Efremov Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus (NIIEFA), based in St Petersburg, has developed a technology to increase the wear and corrosion resistance and fatigue strength of different items from metals and alloys by 200–400%.
