Stainless UK creates marine division

Stainless UK Ltd has formed a new marine division which will specialise in corrosion- resistant materials for coastal and riverside projects. “Most of the major construction companies have marine divisions with very specialised requirements and our new division will focus on meeting their needs with a more streamlined serviceâ€?, said Mike Wells, managing director of Stainless UK. Extra impetus was given to the creation of the new division by the increasing use of stainless steel products in coastal applications where durability is essential. One of the most recent projects has been at Ilfracombe, where main contractors E. Thomas have used stainless steel materials supplied by Stainless UK to reconstitute the concrete legs of the pier. Over a period of time, salt had penetrated the concrete of the existing legs causing corrosion in the carbon steel reinforcement. In the renovation scheme, each of the legs was replaced in turn, using stainless steel mesh and rebar which will provide greater durability in the future. Stainless UK also provided stainless steel bolts for the lighting scheme.
