Outokumpu production sites gain ISO 14001

Outokumpu has recently announced that the company’s integrated stainless steel plant in Calvert, Alabama, US, and stainless steel finishing plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, have gained ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management systems. This makes Outokumpu the only global stainless steel producer with all of its sites operating in accordance with international environmental management standards.

Outokumpu set the ISO 14001 standard as a minimum requirement in 2013, aiming for 100% of its production sites to become ISO 14001 certified in 2016. Previously 90% of the company’s production sites had certification. The requirements of ISO 14001 involve ensuring continual improvement in environmental matters as well as legal compliance. “One of the key elements for Outokumpu is social responsibility and sustainability. This ISO 14001 certification is a clear indication that together, we can accomplish any goal we propose,â€? says Jorge Vieyra, head of production and environmental management at Mexinox, in San Luis Potosí.
