Xiris Automation announced that it has modified its WI2000 automatic inspection system to measure the weld bead geometry and forming characteristics of High Voltage Cable. High Voltage Cable is a multi-layer cable used for transmitting high voltage power underground or underwater. The cable usually contains a metal sheath welded around the insulated wires to protect the integrity of the cable to ensure it does not deteriorate. The metallic shield is effectively a welded tube and is used to equalize the dielectric stress and protect the cable when in use.
Using the WI2000 weld inspection system from Xiris, an operator can be alerted to make adjustments in the welding or forming parameters to ensure the metal sheath tube is being formed and welded correctly. The result is a better-quality welded sheath tube on the cable that has a better chance of meeting the final end user’s specifications.
