Vedanta Resources plans BALCO expansion

Vedanta Resources, a globally diversified metals and mining company, is planning a major expansion in its subsidiary Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO).

Mr Anil Agrawal, Chairman of Vedanta Resources, said, “The group plans to expand the capacity of power plant to 2000MW besides producing 1Mt of aluminium in BALCO. The expansion projects would be taken up once the on-going projects go live.”
BALCO, which has a major aluminium facility in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, would become the first plant in the world to produce 1 million tonnes of aluminium from a single facility. The company is presently operating a 245,000t aluminium plant and an 810MW captive power unit.

After its acquisition by Vedanta Resources, BALCO’s 100,000 tonne-capacity underwent a major expansion. A new plant with a capacity of 325,000tns is ready for operation, besides a 1200 megawatt-power plant set up in BALCO. Both the plants would generate employment opportunity for about 5000 people. Agrawal said, “We are hopeful that we would soon get the consent to operate the power plant that would power the new aluminium plant.”
