Uganda to buy power from AAE

California-based AAE Systems and the Ugandan government have entered into a power purchase agreement for the electricity produced by a 150MW geothermal plant built in western Uganda, according to Uganda’s New Vision.

The USD 1.2B geothermal plant is expected to be finished in about two years. The project is another step in Uganda’s plan to encourage renewable sources of energy as a part of its efforts to expand the power infrastructure.

Currently, only 13% of the country’s population has access to power, according to a New Vision report. The remaining 87% “need it but are unable to have it”, the report states.

AAE will sell the power to Uganda at about USD 0.80 per KWh, according to the report.
