Three Gorges Project

China Three Gorges Project Corp., the company overseeing the construction of the Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River, has called for tenders to supply 16,000 tons of steel products in the first half of this year for the ongoing construction of the dam. The core of the project requires a massive dam to be built midstream on the Yangtze River, which will lead to the establishment of a huge hydropower plant, with a total installed capacity of 18.20 million kw a year. The 16,000 tons of steel products will be used to build underground factories for the third phase construction. Nine domestic steel companies, including Shougang, Handan Iron & Steel, Wuhan Iron & Steel, Hunan Lianyuan Iron & Steel, have submitted documents bidding for the contract. Total steel product consumption for the Three Gorges Project is estimated to be 800,000 tons. Construction of the Three Gorges Project is scheduled for completion in 2009. Total investment in the project is expected to run up to USD 22 billion.
