Duplex Stainless Steels

Duplex stainless steels have a ferritic-austenitic microstructure, in roughly equal proportions 50% ferrite and 50% austenite. Duplex combines many of the attractive properties of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels into one.

Different variants for Duplex

Duplex stainless steels are designed to provide better corrosion resistance, in particular to stress corrosion and pitting corrosion. The microstructure leads to higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels such as Type 304 or 316. Duplex stainless steels have become more and more popular in recent years. There are several variants available, such as Duplex 2205, Superduplex 2507 or lean duplex with lower nickel content.

Sandvik returns to production after fire

Sandvik’s wire production facility in Sandviken, Sweden has begun its first production runs after a major fire attacked the facility. The fire took place on 14 April and continued on into 15 April 2011, destroying equipment and damaging parts. The pickling plant within the wire production facility was completely destroyed and some of the wire drawing machines were damaged. No one was injured.  After a complete assessment of the damage, work began immediately on decontaminating, cleaning, repairing and, where applicable, replacing the plant.

Outokumpu to deliver duplex for biogas tanks

Outokumpu will deliver stainless steel to Börger GmbH. The duplex will be used to build tanks required in biogas production. This order marks Outokumpu's first order for the newly launched duplex steel grade LDX 2404®.  The steel will be produced at the Outokumpu in Avesta, Sweden. LDX 2404® is the ideal choice for the tanks due to the high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties of the steel.

Thyssenkrupp severs stainless division

CEO of ThyssenKrupp, Heinrich Hiesinger, has announced that the company is splitting off its stainless division so that more of its sales fall to other divisions. As a result of the split, more than 35,000 workers will be let go. The main reason for splitting off the division comes as a result of overall debt, according to Hiesinger. The stainless steel division has been running at a loss over past few years with last year's turnover amounting to EUR 5.9 billion.

Turku bridge to be clad in stainless

The new Myllysilta bridge to be constructed in Turku will have a modern stainless steel cladding. The cladding will be made out of Outokumpu duplex stainless steel. The new bridge is scheduled for completion next autumn as the original Myllysilta bridge began to sag downwards in March 2010 and had to be demolished. WSP received the design competition award arranged by the city of Turku with their Myllyn Teräs bridge proposal.

Sandvik and Vasa Museum to save national treasure

The Vasa Museum and Sandvik are taking on a critical project to replace 5000 wrought iron bolts on the Swedish heritage vessel. A national treasure, Vasa capsized and sank in 1628 as it prepared for its maiden voyage; it was raised from the bottom of the harbour in 1961 and carefully restored.

The advantages of Duplex Stainless Steels

Corrosion Resistance: Duplex stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance due to its high chromium and molybdenum content. It is particularly resistant to stress corrosion cracking and pitting, which makes it suitable for use in harsh environments. There are several variants available, such as Duplex 2205, Superduplex 2507 or lean duplex with lower nickel content.

Strength: Duplex stainless steel is much stronger than conventional austenitic stainless steels, which allows for thinner and lighter constructions without sacrificing durability.

Toughness: Duplex stainless steel has a high toughness, which means it is resistant to brittle fracture and impact. This property makes it suitable for use in cryogenic applications.

Cost-effectiveness: Although duplex stainless steel is more expensive than conventional austenitic stainless steels, its superior properties can lead to cost savings in the long run by reducing maintenance and downtime.

Versatility: Duplex stainless steel can be used in a wide range of applications, including chemical processing, oil and gas, marine, and pulp and paper industries. It is also used in construction and architecture due to its aesthetic appeal.
