BHP produces nickel sulfate crystals from Kwinana plant
BHP has produced the first nickel sulfate crystals from its nickel sulfate plant in Kwinana, south of Perth in Western Australia. The nickel sulfate plant is an Australian-first and will produce 100,000 tonnes of nickel sulfate per year when fully operational.
Ken MacKenzie is next BHP Chairman
The BHP Board has elected Ken MacKenzie to succeed Jac Nasser as Chairman. Mr MacKenzie will assume the role of Chairman effective 1 September 2017, following Mr Nasser’s retirement as both chairman and a non-executive director.
BHP to write down nickel & aluminum value
Analysts expect BHP Billiton Limited to write down the value of its Australian aluminum and nickel assets by some USD 4B in February in response to the continued strength of the Australian dollar and weak aluminum prices which have undermined hopes for a short term recovery.
Brazil: pellet concentration unit
Brazilian iron pellet maker Samarco, a 50:50 JV between Vale and BHP Billiton, is considering building a new pellet concentration unit in the city of Germano in Minas Gerais state and an 8.25 million tns/yr iron ore pellet plant in Ponta Ubu in Espirito Santo state.
