The Statoil board has agreed to the construction of a new sweetening plant at the Mongstad refinery near Bergen. The facilities will remove sulphur in the cracker naphtha that is used to make petrol. This is necessary in order to meet future EU requirements to the quality of petrol. The EU member countries have special regulations for the quality of sulphur content, and new petrol quality will enable car manufacturers to utilise new and more efficient technology for purifying car exhaust.The environmental gain is better air quality in the future.
