Sumitomo launches stainless steel AC6020M grade

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd has recently developed the new AC6020M grade for finishing and general turning of stainless steel and launched it in November 2016. This product ensures stable machining and long tool life.

Owing to its excellent properties, such as corrosion resistance, thermal resistance and machinability, demands for stainless steel are growing year by year. On the other hand, its high work hardening rate causes chipping of the cutting edge, and low thermal conductivity prevents cutting heat dissipation, thereby raising the temperature at the cutting edge and promoting plastic deformation.

To overcome these disadvantages, the new AC6020M grade was developed for stainless steel turning. Together with the other AC6000M series grades, it is possible to machine all kinds of stainless steel under all cutting conditions from roughing to finishing, continuous to interrupted machining, and low-speed to high-speed machining.

This product has doubled the fracture resistance of conventional inserts, utilizing a new carbide substrate that exhibits both wear resistance and toughness, along with Sumitomo Electric’s proprietary coating technology “Abosotech Platinum™”. The smooth surface treatment of the coating layer drastically reduces adhesion on the cutting edge to achieve stable machining by preventing sudden damage and chipping to the cutting edge.
