Stephen Cater present lectures at Coventry University

TWI’s Stephen Cater recently presented the latest in his series of lectures to over 80 Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science students at the University of Coventry. The lectures, delivered as part of TWI’s STEM activities, cover TWI’s core expertise in welding; in particular the solid-state welding techniques of rotary friction, linear friction and friction stir welding. In this year’s lecture, particular emphasis was placed on the quickly developing field of friction stir welding high temperature materials such as steel and titanium, discussing the materials engineering challenges faced in developing the required tooling and the economic aspects of applying the technology in industrial applications.
