Steel tariffs scrapped

The White House has lifted controversial tariffs on imported steel 21 months into their projected three-year life span, saying they had achieved the purposes for which they had been established. The tariffs were imposed by US President Bush under Section 201 of federal trade law, which allows the President to utilise tariffs as a means of preserving stability in domestic industries.
