The Steel Construction Institute has launched its computer-aided learning package âStainless SteelCAL for Engineers,â? a sister module to Stainless SteelCAL for Architects, launched on the Internet in early 2004. The modules teach design and specification principles in a fresh and engaging manner, adopting the philosophy of âlearning by doingâ?. A wide range of multi-media interactive learning activities is available, such as video clips, multiple-choice questions, animations, drag and drop challenges and an image library. The new module is aimed at engineering students and young practicing engineers, and it provides computer assisted learning on structural applications of stainless steel. Activities are grouped in five topic areas: material, fabrication, members, joints and fire. Examples of activities include designing a column using web-based design software and predicting the deflection behaviour of stainless and carbon steel beams. The new module is web-based, accessed though the same portal as the Architects’ module.
