Stainless industry makes comeback

According to Steel & Metals Market Research (SMR), from a global perspective, the stainless steel industry has left the crisis behind. Production in 2010 reached a new record of 32.2 million tns of crude steel and the share of 300 Type grades (Nickel Austenitic) was 57.5% for 2010. The high volume comes as a result of stronger than expected production in the non organized sector in India and the private producers in China. A moderate production growth to 35 million tns is expected for 2011. According to SMR, Chinese crude stainless steel production reached 11.8 million tns in 2010, up 7 % from 11 million tns in 2009 and Indian production reached 2.9 million tns, up 12 % from 2.61 million tns in 2009.
