Siemens snags EPC contract for US power plant

Siemens has been awarded an order for the turnkey supply of the Panda Sherman Power Project in Sherman, Texas. The company will supply the natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) in consortium with its partner, Bechtel. The purchaser for this advanced power plant is Panda Power Funds headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The multi-shaft combined-cycle plant will be a Siemens Flex-PlantTM 30, with a gross installed electrical capacity of 758 megawatts (MW).
This plant will be one of the cleanest fossil-fueled plants in the U.S. with low carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and a fast start gas turbine that reduces overall plant startup emissions. Once completed, the generating station will be able to supply the power needs of approximately 750,000 homes in the North Texas area.
The order volume including a long-term service agreement is approximately $300 million (USD). The project is expected to be wrap up by the end of 2014. The natural-gas-fired Panda Sherman CCPP will be located at the Progress Industrial Park 3 in South Sherman. Siemens will deliver the power island equipment, including two SGT6-5000F gas turbines, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, two SGen6-1000A generators, one SGen6-2000H generator, the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system as well as two Benson heavy duct- fired heat recovery steam generators manufactured by NEM. A long-term service agreement has also been signed for the main generation components. Bechtel will be responsible for the engineering and procurement for the balance of the plant, and the installation, construction and commissioning of the facility.
“With this, as our second project in Texas based on Flex-Plant technology this year, and our two Flex-Plant projects in California at Lodi and El Segundo, we are reassured of the US market’s need for clean fossil power solutions with fast ramping capability to balance intermittent renewables on the power grid”, said Roland Fischer, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division at Siemens Energy in a press release. “The Siemens Flex-Plant technology was specifically designed for this purpose, and is an important part of our energy portfolio inclusive of renewable sources.”
The gas turbines, steam turbine and generators will be manufactured in the Siemens factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is the main production facility for Siemens 60 Hz power generation equipment.
