ReNew with JERA to establish green ammonia in Odisha

ReNew Energy Global plc, listed on Nasdaq, has joined forces with JERA Co., Japan’s power generation company, to establish a green ammonia production facility in India. Through its subsidiary, ReNew E-Fuels Private Limited, ReNew will collaborate with JERA to explore the development of a green ammonia production project in Paradip, Odisha.

The companies plan to conduct a joint study to assess the commercial viability of the project. The proposed facility will harness approximately 500 MW of high-capacity utilization factor (CUF) renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, a key feedstock for green ammonia. By 2030, the project aims to achieve an annual production capacity of around 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia.

ReNew stated that JERA will have the right to procure this green ammonia for use in Japan, highlighting the international dimension of the collaboration.

Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of ReNew, expressed excitement about the partnership, underscoring its role in expediting the transition to clean energy. He emphasized the potential of green ammonia in reducing carbon emissions and noted the project’s alignment with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Yukio Kani, Global Chief Executive Officer & Chair of JERA, hailed the joint development agreement as a significant milestone toward achieving a decarbonized society. He emphasized the importance of sustainability, affordability, and stability in future energy solutions.

In addition to this endeavor, ReNew has previously inked a framework agreement with the Government of Egypt in 2022 to establish a green hydrogen plant with an $8 billion investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Moreover, ReNew is involved in a joint venture named GH4India Pvt Ltd with Indian Oil Ltd and L&T to collectively venture into the green hydrogen business.

This collaboration between ReNew Energy Global plc and JERA marks a crucial step towards sustainable energy production and underscores the growing global momentum towards decarbonization.
