PSEG Power seeks permit for Bethlehem Energy Cente

PSEG Power New York Inc. has submitted an Article X application supplement for its proposed Bethlehem Energy Center (BEC), a 750mw natural gas fired combined-cycle power plant. The USD 400 million project would replace the existing 400mw Albany Steam Station located about three miles south of Albany in Bethlehem, NY. The station was acquired by PSEGNY, a subsidiary of PSEG Power, from Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation in May 2000. It will be retired when the new BEC begins commercial operation. The BEC project calls for redevelopment of an existing electric generation site and will replace 1950s technology with a clean, efficient facility that will almost double the energy supply output of the site while dramatically reducing air and water environmental impact. The facility will be among the cleanest power plants in New York, reducing emission rates of nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide by 97–98%. It will also reduce use of Hudson River water for cooling by 98–99% in comparison to the existing plant.
