Posco is beginning construction on a facility in the Guangdong area of China with annual capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes of electrical steel sheets and 50,000 tonnes of colour-coated steel sheets. Posco Engineering and Construction will carry out the USD 17.48-million construction project, which is expected to be completed by March 2003. On completion of the new facility, the Shunde Pohang Coated Steel Co. will be able to produce 100,000 tonnes of electrical steel sheets and 50,000 tonnes of colour-coated steel sheets in addition to its current annual production of 100,000 tonnes of galvanised steel sheets.
Following the Shunde Pohang Coated Steel expansion project, Posco plans to begin construction on the stainless steel cold rolled facility in Zhangjiagang (annual capacity of 140,000 tonnes) and the colour coated steel sheet facility in Dalian (annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes) from March of this year. The upgrades are part of Posco’s plans to invest USD 150 million to construct additional production facilities in China by 2003.
