Swedish company Sandvik has developed a complete portfolio of grades with mechanical properties specifically developed for welding in cryogenic applications. Designed to help customers achieve trouble-free mechanical welding operations, the grades provide high-quality weldments that can withstand the tough conditions prevailing in cryogenic applications.
The grades also offer a balanced content of microelements with minimum impurity levels to reduce the risk of hot cracking during welding operations. This ensures optimum arc stability and fluidity with minimal spatter and good wetting properties. The chemical compositions in Sandvik’s grades for cryogenic applications are optimised in terms of Charpy-impact toughness. They also offer high tensile strengths, high yield strengths, good ductility and uniform elongation. Controlled ferrite content provides resistance to micro fissuring. The grades also help compliance with a wide range of standards such as AWS, SFA, ASME Section II, IX and ASME U, UM, R, S; TüV certification, CRN registration; and CE/PED certification.
Typical applications include manufacturing of dewars, containers, tanks, cryostats and transfer systems for transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquid nitrogen and liquid helium.
