Outokumpu improves ferritic capability

Outokumpu has revealed details of another major investment at its flagship works in Tornio, Finland. The company says that it is to invest USD 117 million spread over 3 years in replacing one of the sites five annealing and pickling lines (the AP 2). The replacement is expected to start up by end 2008, reaching full capacity by end 2009. This will give Tornio an additional capacity of 75,000t/y of cold rolled products, the company says. The new AP line will have a capacity of 300,000t/y, Outokumpu says, producing austenitic products and, more importantly, improving its capability to produce brighter ferritic grades. When the investment is fully ramped up, Tornio’s annual cold rolling capacity will be over 1.25m the statement concludes.
