NSSC (Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation) has successfully developed NSSC2120 (21Cr-2Ni-N), the world’s first type 304 substituting type lean duplex stainless steel with high heat-input weldability. NSSC2120 can enhance the efficiency of welding and also boasts high strength compared to Type 304.
To meet the increasing demand for duplex stainless steel, NSSC has expanded production capacity for duplex quarto plate in Yawata Works and has been building up a variety of our duplex stainless steel grades.
The existing lean duplex stainless steels have to restrict heat-input in welding and struggle in terms of welding efficiency. NSSC has solved this problem with its innovative design of chemical composition and manufacturing technology. High weldability ensures great ease of work on customers.
Since NSSC2120 is approximately twice as strong (YS 0.2%) as Type304, it can reduce the quantity of steel used in the equipment by thin wall designs (as low as 50%, depending on usage). This results in a great reduction in materials procurement costs.
NSSC2120 also features conservation of valuable material resources and price stability against Type304, since it has reduced rare metals such as nickel and molybdenum.
NSSC2120 is suitable for an extensive range of applications; it can act as a substitute for Type304, S32101 (the existing type304 substituting type lean duplex stainless steel) and carbon steels. It can be used for chemical tankers, seawater desalination plants, pulp & paper plants and such other large structures; storage tanks for water, food, chemicals and others and pressure vessels; and civil engineering and building construction, including welded H-beam.
