The NNPC/Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) joint venture has awarded a EUR 470 million contract for the implementation of the Soku Integrated Gas Supply Development project as part of efforts to fulfil its gas obligations to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas 4th and 5th trains expansion project. The Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract was awarded to SAIPEM. The contract involves the building of a third train at the existing Soku gas supply plant, installation of a new fiscal meter for total plant capacity and change-out of the instrumentation system to a more modern one. Some common facilities at the plant including flare system, export gas and other piping, will be upgraded in addition to the extension of the inlet manifold. It was disclosed that to increase gas supply, eight gas wells will be drilled between 2005 and 2006. In a second phase of the project, 10 additional oil wells are to be drilled between 2006 and 2008. The Soku Integrated Gas Supply Development project is expected to supply one billion standard cubic feet of gas per day to NLNG 4th and 5th trains in 2006 with the product sent to the Bonny Terminal for export. All work is expected to be completed by July, 2006.
