New stainless facility for Baosteel

Baoshan Iron & Steel (Baosteel) plans to build a new stainless steel works with three continuous casters. A consortium including Siemens, SMS Demag and Thyssen Consulting will construct the facility. Scope of supply will include pig iron pretreatment, EAF, an argon oxygen decarburisation (AOD) converter, vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) plant and three single-strand casters, one of which will be designed for the production of stainless steel. The new facility is scheduled to begin production in the spring of 2004.
