Managing the environment

Acería de Alava SA, a subsidiary of the Tubacex Group which manufactures stainless steel billets and round bars, has obtained ISO 14001 environmental management certification from AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification. The certificate covers all activities at its plant in Amurrio, Alava. With this certificate, all the Tubacex Group’s production processes at its plants in Spain (Llodio and Amurrio) are now covered by this environmental management certificate, from the receipt of incoming raw materials through the manufacturing of stainless steel at Acerálava to the shipping of finished tubes by TTI (Tubacex Tubos Inoxidables SA). To obtain the certification, the company had to systemise its environment-related activities. Major efforts were called for in all areas of the plant, from monitoring of raw materials through product storage, monitoring of fume emissions and air quality, water treatment, management and recycling of inert waste, prevention and plans for tackling emergencies and monitoring of the loading and unloading of hazardous goods.
