Linde AG, Wiesbaden, will build Europe’s largest natural gas liquefaction plant on Melkøya island near Hammerfest, Norway, north of the Arctic Circle for the international Snøhvit Group. The Snøhvit Group is a consortium of companies that includes the Norwegian Statoil and Norsk Hydro and the French TotalFinaElf. The contract includes tank storage facilities for natural gas at a temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius, the provision of specialised equipment needed to load the liquefied gas onto tankers as well as project management, engineering, procurement and construction supervision services for the entire liquefaction plant. Statoil commissioned Linde on behalf of the Snøhvit Group to supply the key equipment for the liquefaction process. The total value of the contracts will be EUR 380 million. The plant will have the capacity to produce 4.3 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas and will be ready for commercial production at the latest in 2006. The facility is destined to process gas from the Snøhvit and other fields in the Barents Sea.
