Global molybdenum production and usage rise in Q1 2025

Figures released by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) show that global production of molybdenum rose by 1% to 165.4 million pounds (mlbs) in Q1 2025 and a global usage of molybdenum in Q1 2025 rose 6% to 170.6 mlbs.

China remained the major producer of molybdenum at 76.7 mlbs – a 3% rise when compared to the previous quarter. South America remained the second major producer of molybdenum at 42.6 mlbs – a 4% fall when compared to the previous quarter. Production in North America rose 4% to 32.5 mlbs and Other Regions fell 3% to 13.6 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter.

China remained the major user of molybdenum at 84.9 mlbs -an 8% rise when compared to the previous quarter. Europe remained the second major user at 28.7 mlbs – a fall of 1% when compared to the previous quarter or a 9% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Use in Other Regions, USA and Japan saw an increase of 2% to 23 mlbs, 18% to 17.8 mlbs, and 8% to 11.6 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter.
