Future bright for specialist metal group

The future of the South Yorkshire metals industry is bright according to the Special Metals Information Group (SMIG), a group of independent companies that have recently come together to promote their expertise and resources to potential customers in the UK and around the world. SMIG members are involved in the supply and processing of special metals used in high technology applications such as the aerospace, power generation, medical, oil and gas industry. The group includes some of the biggest players in the industry and smaller specialist companies, all of whom have recognised the advantages to be gained from pooling their skills, many of which are uniquely placed within South Yorkshire. The group currently has 15 members, including SS Bright Drawers (Sheffield), AvestaPolarit, Allvac Ltd and NDT Ltd. SMIG, which is maintained by members subscriptions, has also received funding from the DTI’s Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), funded by Yorkshire Forward. It will exhibit at the Stainless Steel World Expo 2003 later this year in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
