Exxon to build gas terminal in Wales

Exxonmobil plans to build the world’s biggest gas import terminal near Milford Haven in Wales at an estimated cost of GBP 1 billion. Exxon, in partnership with Qatar Petroleum, has applied for planning permission for the LNG terminal. It is pressing ahead with this huge project as National Grid Transco is endeavouring to develop an LNG import facility on the Isle of Grain in Kent. Meanwhile Statoil, the Norwegian gas group, is expected to go ahead with the development of the Ormen Lange field in the North Sea, because of the demand it expects to see in the UK. Experts believe that the UK will be importing gas by 2005 or 2006 and will be almost entirely reliant on imports by the beginning of the next decade. Exxon’s plan would be to import LNG from Qatar in purpose built tankers. The import terminal would be on the site of a refinery which has been shut but whose jetty remains. Construction of the first phase would begin in 2004 and it would come on-stream in 2007. A second development phase would start in 2006. The Milford Haven terminal’s import capacity would be around 15 million tpy of LNG.
