EMD plant in S. Africa

South Africa’s mineral and metallurgical research and development agency, Mintek, wants to build a SAR 480 million plant at Coega to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), which is used in batteries. Mintek is seeking partners for the plant and for a battery manufacturing plant which could be sited alongside the EMD facility. EMD is a key ingredient in the manufacture of dry cell batteries, particularly alkaline batteries. Mintek is also the driving force behind the establishment of a magnesium production plant in Western Cape, in partnership with Eskom and Anglo American. Delta also has an EMD plant at Newcastle in Australia.
