Columbia refinery receives prelim okay for loan

The Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States has voted to grant preliminary approval for a USD 2.84 billion direct loan/loan guarantee to Colombia's Refineria de Cartagena S.A. (Reficar). When approved, the financing will support the purchases of equipment and services from more than 150 large and small U.S. engineering, design, equipment supply, contracting and process license firms, including Chicago Bridge & Iron, Foster Wheeler, Exxon/Mobil and UOP.

GTL demo plant comes to Brazil

Oxford Catalysts Group PLC's Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) demonstration plant has recently arrived in Fortaleza, Brazil following the completion of its construction in Asia. The integrated GTL demonstration plant incorporates the Group's proprietary microchannel reactor and catalyst technologies for the key Steam Methane Reforming ("SMR") and Fischer-Tropsch ("FT") steps of the GTL process. The demonstration is fully funded and managed by the Group's partners

Petrobras Chile receives award

Petrobras Chile has received the 2010 Outstanding Company of the Year Award for its contribution to the economic development of Brazil and Chile. CEO of Petrobras Chile, Vilson Reichemback, accepted the award given by the president of the Chilean-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Juan Irarrázabal, and the Ambassador of Brazil in Chile, Frederico Cezar de Araújo, in Santiago.

VRTEX 360 Upgrade Program Release

Lincoln Electric has released the first VRTEX™ 360 software upgrade offered since the launch of the training system in late 2009.The upgrade package for this virtual reality weld training system, available now, is ideal for schools, unions and other training facilities to instruct and educate welding operators in several virtual environments, using stick, MIG or flux-cored arc welding processes.

Turku bridge to be clad in stainless

The new Myllysilta bridge to be constructed in Turku will have a modern stainless steel cladding. The cladding will be made out of Outokumpu duplex stainless steel. The new bridge is scheduled for completion next autumn as the original Myllysilta bridge began to sag downwards in March 2010 and had to be demolished. WSP received the design competition award arranged by the city of Turku with their Myllyn Teräs bridge proposal.

St.George Mining and BHP form agreement

St George Mining Limited has signed an agreement that will give BHP Billiton Limited (BHP)  rights to nickel on a property in Western Australia in exchange for funding exploration work. The deal gives BHP a 2 year option over nickel rights at nine tenements covering approximately 498sq/km at the East Laverton property, 200km northeast of Kalgoorlie

Nordex introduces N117/2400 turbine

Nordex has added the N117/2400 wind turbine to its Gamma Generation of turbines. The new turbine was designed specifically for light wind sites, creating new power generating potential for locations across the USA. The company will debut the N117/2400 for the US market at Windpower in Anaheim, California from May 2011. The new turbine will increase America’s wind potential by turning many light wind sites into feasible power producing areas.

New nickel plant in Philippines

Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC), together with its partners including Sumitomo Metal Mining (SMM), will invest USD 1.4 billion to build a second nickel plant in the Philippines. Construction is currently underway and the new plant will start production in mid 2013. NAC has a 22.5% stake in the new project, while SMM has a 55% stake.

Herbert H. Uhlig Award for Prof Thomas Ladwein

Thomas L. Ladwein, chair for electrochemistry, corrosion and tribology at Aalen University of Applied Science, Germany, was the recipient of the prestigious “Herbert H. Uhlig Award” from NACE International. The award was given during the annual conference recently held in Houston, Texas to honor Professor Ladwein’s exemplary efforts in academic corrosion education.

Siemens VAI to supply rolling mill for stainless

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies (Siemens) is constructing a new rolling mill for stainless steel bar and light profiles in India for Viraj Profiles Limited (Viraj Profiles). As per the agreement, Siemens will design, engineer and deliver mechanical, electrical and automation equipment. The value of the order is estimated in the double digit million Euro range.
