Directors of Carpenter Technology Corp. have elevated president and chief operating officer Robert J. Torcolini to the positions of chairman, president, and chief executive officer, as of July 1. Current chairman and CEO Dennis M. Draeger will retire on 30 June. He has held those posts since July 1, 2001. Torcolini, 53, was elected president, COO, and a director of Carpenter in 2002. He joined Carpenter in 1973 as an assistant physicist in the research division and held several metallurgical roles until becoming a technical manager in 1981. He was named vice president of Carpenter’s former Steel Division Technical Services group in 1988, then Steel Division vice president, Manufacturing Operations in 1993. In 1997, Torcolini was named president of Dynamet Inc., a titanium bar/wire producer that Carpenter had purchased. In 2000, he became senior v.p. – Engineered Products Operations. Torcolini holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Harvard’s advanced management program.
