Calpine announces Virginia power plant

Calpine Corporation has announced plans to build, own and operate a 1000mw combined-cycle, natural gas-fired electric power generating facility to be located in Gravel Neck, Surry County, Virginia, USA. The proposed Chippokes Energy Center represents an investment of approximately USD 500 million and is planned for commercial operations in mid-2005. The proposed Chippokes Energy Center will include three advanced technology combustion turbines in a combined-cycle configuration with a single steam turbine, resulting in a base load capacity of approximately 790mw, with the ability to produce up to 1000mw in order to cater for peak demand. Calpine will manage construction of the project and will own and operate the facility. The project will interconnect with Dominion Virginia Power’s Surry substation, providing excellent transmission access to markets throughout the SE.
