Outokumpu to invest USD 45M in pilot plant in USA

Outokumpu is advancing its EVOLVE strategy to enhance the production of critical carbon-free materials, including chromium metal and enriched ferrochrome. The company will invest approximately USD 45M in a new pilot plant in New Hampshire, USA, scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2027.

The pilot phase aims to demonstrate the scalability and industrial feasibility of the process, scaling production from 1 kg to 1 ton per day. Following a successful pilot, Outokumpu plans to build the first industrial-scale plant, with an anticipated annual capacity of approximately 10,000 tons. The industrial plant is expected to be operational between 2029 and 2030, unlocking the full commercial potential of the proprietary technology from 2030 onwards.

This innovative process produces enriched ferrochrome with a lower carbon footprint, suitable for use in melt shops or for external sales at higher prices. It also enables new production pathways for high-purity metals, such as chromium metal, targeting high-value markets including aerospace, defence, and energy sectors.
