North American Stainless (NAS), U.S. subsidiary of Acerinox, S.A. has been awarded the contract to supply stainless steel reinforcement bars for the new Champlain Bridge that will span the St. Lawrence River from the community of Ile-des-Soeurs to Brossard in the Montreal metropolitan area, Quebec.
The new bridge is part of the New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project, an 8.4 km long corridor with improvements to the existing highway complementing the construction of the new bridge. The focal point of the project will be the 3.4 km bridge. Design and construction cost of the project is estimated at 2.15 billion Canadian Dollars for the bridge with a total cost for the project estimated at 4.2 billion Canadian Dollars.
Of this consortium the main company is SNC-Lavalin Inc as a 50% partner. Stainless steel reinforcement bars were selected by Signature on the Saint Lawrence due to the harsh weather conditions of the region and the extensive use of de-icing salts that have been major factors in the deterioration of the current bridge causing extensive corrosion and degradation of the concrete. North American Stainless (NAS) will supply the project with approximate 15,000 MT of Grade 2304 Stainless steel reinforcement bar.
