Chevron-Texaco will spend USD 150 million over the next three years to develop a natural gas field in northern Colombia and carry out further exploration in the area, officials said. The firm’s head of operations for Colombia, Peter Sommer, said extraction facilities and a pipeline would be constructed at the Catalina field, in La Guajira department, some 1.000 km. north of Bogota. Reserves there were estimated to be 3 trillion cubic feet (85.18 billion cubic meters) and would be exploited for 20 years, leaving open the possibility of building a pipeline to export gas that is surplus to Colombia’s needs to Panama or Venezuela.
