Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will develop an original compressed natural gas (CNG) transporter in co-operation with US gas storage tank technology firm EnerSea Transport LLC by the end of this year. The first project of its kind in the world, CNG ships allow transportation of natural gas after it is compressed under normal temperature, unlike LNG (liquefied natural gas) ships that transport the gas after it is liquefied at a very low temperature of –163 degrees Celsius. The negative aspect of CNG ships is that they can only carry a quarter of the volume that LNG ships can manage, forcing at least three CNG ships to move for each transporting project. “But because there is no need to re-liquefy and/or re-vaporize the natural gas with the CNG ship transport method, we won’t have to build factories for such jobs, saving us great expense,” an HHI representative said. CNG ships will measure 289 meters in length, 60 meters in width and 29 meters in depth. EnerSea Transport LLC will be responsible for designing the cargo tanker and cargo operating system while Hyundai will take charge of building the ship and functional equipment. The development of the first ship is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
