Zhejiang to become nuclear power base in China

East China’s Zhejiang Province is likely to become the largest nuclear power base in China, for its good economic performance and favourable geological conditions, according to Kang Rixin, General Manager of China Nuclear Power Group Corporation. After Qinshan Nuclear Power Station, China plans to construct another nuclear power base in Sanmen County in the province, the project is designed to install two million kW of capacity in the first phase. The first- and third-phase projects of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station have gone into operation. The No. 1 generating unit has gone into commercial operation, and the No. 2 unit will also go into operation soon. By then, total installed capacity of Qinshan Nuclear Power Base will top 2.9 million kW. China’s existing nuclear power capacity and those that are still in construction total 8.7 million kW at present. The installed capacity of Dayawan and Ling’ao nuclear power stations is 3.8 million kW; and that of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, two million kW. By 2020, China’s installed capacity of power will top 800 million kW, of which 32 million kW will be nuclear power, accounting for 4% of the total.
