Wuxi Huaguang signs deal with Press Metal

China-based Wuxi Huaguang Environment & Energy Group Co., Ltd. has signed a contract with Malaysia-based Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad (PMETAL) for a thermal power plant supporting project. The agreement includes the supply of four 220t/h Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boilers and is valued at over one billion yuan (approximately USD 138.2M). The project is linked to Press Metal’s upcoming alumina refinery under PT Kalimantan Alumina Nusantara (KAN) in Sanggau, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The project will include a power plant, a port, and supporting infrastructure. Once completed, it will meet the power and steam requirements of Qili Aluminum’s production, ensuring a higher self-sufficiency rate and a stable alumina supply, which is crucial for the company’s sustainable development.

According to PMETAL’s release on September 18, 2024, the company plans to construct an alumina refinery in Sanggau with an initial production capacity of 1 to 1.2 million metric tonnes (Phase 1), with the potential to double output in a future expansion. The total investment for Phase 1 is estimated at USD 750M (equivalent to RM 3.238bn). Press Metal holds an 80% equity stake in KAN, while PT Alakasa Alumina Refineri (AAR) and PT Dinamika Sejahtera Mandiri (DSM) own 19.77% and 0.23%, respectively.
