W. Australian co-generation plants

Western Australia-based utility AlintaGas has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alcoa Australia to jointly develop co-generation power plants at Alcoa’s alumina refineries in Western Australia. Alinta said the co-generation plants would be developed on a staged basis to match growth in electricity requirements for Western Australia’s SW interconnected system. The first plant is scheduled to be operational in late 2004. Alcoa would use all of the steam output from the plants in its alumina refineries and Alinta would sell the electricity into the retail electricity market. Alcoa and Alinta plan to work towards a final decision on the project over coming months, the company said. Alcoa operates three alumina refineries, with total output of over 7-mil mt/year, in Western Australia.
