Westinghouse Electric Company is to design and manufacture a rapid refuelling package and install a replacement nuclear reactor vessel head at a plant owned by Omaha Public Power District. The work to be carried out by Westinghouse, wholly owned by BNFL, is worth in excess of USD 10 million and will be carried out at the Fort Calhoun Station in Nebraska, USA, during the plant’s 2006 refuelling outage. When the modifications are fully implemented several components around the reactor vessel head will be consolidated into modules. Westinghouse has said that the improvements will enhance the safety of workers, minimize dose and reduce the critical outage path by three days.
