USA: nuclear vessel head contract

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company has awarded Westinghouse a contract for replacement reactor vessel head (RVH) installation and upgrade services for Beaver Valley Unit 1 in Shippingport, Pa, USA. The contract award is in addition to earlier awards to Westinghouse for replacement RVH hardware and replacement control rod drive mechanism housings. The RVH upgrade will reduce the time required for reactor vessel disassembly and re-assembly in support of plant refueling. Other benefits of the upgrade include reduced risks to personnel, significant reduction in radiation exposure, improvements in equipment reliability, and reduced polar crane demand. The replacement RVH and upgrades will be installed during a spring 2006 refueling outage.
