TATA Steel opens processing centre

TATA Steel has invested GBP 1.3 million in a new processing and distribution centre located in Scunthorpe. The project was built in response to the UK’s renewable energy program and expected growth in the wind power sector. The new facility can handle up to 200,000tns/yr of steel plate manufactured at the company’s Scunthorpe Plate Mill and their Dalzell Plate Mill in Motherwell. Three 40,000tns/yr profiling machines have been installed on site to process plate for delivery to fabricators who will use them to build tubular wind tower structures. The profiling machines will cut the plates into the shapes necessary for fabricating conical towers. Most of the material generated from Tata Steel’s facility will be delivered to customers in mainland Europe and the UK.
