The U.S. Department of Energy has announced that GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has been selected to lead a USD 2 million additive manufacturing research project. GEH will lead the project by producing sample replacement parts in corrosion resistant alloys for nuclear power plants.

Alstom has been awarded a contract by Alcan Gove Pty Ltd of Australia (formerly Nabalco), to supply an oil-fired boiler also designed for future gas conversion.

The Australian state of Queensland will get a new A$500 million (US$284.8 million) gas-fired power station by 2005.

Calpine Corporation is constructing a $450 million electrical generating plant in southern California that is scheduled to come online at the end of 2003. Located near Lebec, off Interstate Highway 5 North, Calpine's Pastoria Energy Center is a natural gas-fired combined cycle plant that will utilize three GE combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and a steam turbine generator to produce 750MW of electricity. The company broke ground on the project last July and has started mechanical erection. Pastoria is being engineered by Utility Engineering (Minneapolis, Minnesota), while Kvaerner-Songer, Incorporated (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is performing construction activities.

Brazilian companies that use large amounts of electric power plan to invest 4bn reais (US$1.6bn) in generation projects over the next five years.
