What are nickel alloys?

Nickel-based alloys are a group of metallic materials composed primarily of nickel with the addition of various other elements. These alloys exhibit exceptional corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and excellent mechanical properties. They are widely used in industries such as aerospace, chemical processing, power generation, and oil and gas. Nickel-based alloys can be tailored to meet specific requirements by adjusting the composition and heat treatment processes.

Why select nickel based alloys?

There are several reasons to select nickel alloys or Ni-hard for various applications: the corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, it’s versatility, high strength and toughness, the compatibility with other materials and finally its electrical and magnetic properties.

Chinalco rolls first coil at the Danieli Steckel mill

The Chinalco Steckel mill plant has been designed to produce 4,000 tpy of plates and 58,000 tpy of coils for stainless and non-ferrous alloys (titanium, nickel and copper) for a total capacity of 62,000 tpy. The steel plant has a compact design and the complete line, from cast ingot furnaces to the plate finishing line fits into just 200 m. The line is completed by a bottom-drive vertical edger, to control material spread during the rolling process; a flying crop shear, to guarantee the good shape of head/tail before the coiling in the coiling drums; U-tube laminar cooling to guarantee the proper cooling and ensure the metallurgic characteristic of the end products; and a hot plate leveler.

NORSOK approval for SXP seamless Super Duplex Pipe

Schulz Xtruded Products, the most recent addition to the Schulz Group of Companies, are renowned for hot extruded and cold worked seamless pipes from 1” up to 16” NPS in all sorts of CRA and Nickel grades.

Talon Metals intersects massive Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide

Talon Metals will provide an exploration update on the Tamarack North Nickel-Copper-PGE project (“Tamarack North Project”), located in Minnesota, USA. This update focuses on the results of the recent follow-up drilling in the newly discovered 221 Zone.

Duplex Self Tapping Screws Are Perfect Fasteners

Corrosion is an ever-present threat to many metal structures, particularly those located in marine environments such as offshore oil and gas facilities. Grade 316 stainless steel screws are widely used in the construction of such facilities and is being superseded by tougher, longer-lasting duplex self tapping screws.

Kola MMC revamps machinery and equipment

Kola MMC, a Norilsk Nickel subsidiary, purchased 78 units of different types of machinery and equipment for its subdivisions in H1 2015. Total cost of equipment purchased made up about EUR 4.14M. Replacement of fixed assets is of the top priority for the company since new machinery and equipment are critical for safe production process and higher efficiency.

Bodycote launches new European facilities

Bodycote, the thermal processing services provider, is investing significantly in new specialty stainless steel processes (S3P) facilities. In response to exponentially growing customer demand, the company’s S3P subdivision recently opened a new Greenfield facility in France and completed another round of expansion in its Ohio, North America site.

Sandvik launches Pressurfect for GDI tubing

ThyssenKrupp signs long-term agreement with ITP

ThyssenKrupp Aerospace UK, a company belonging to the ThyssenKrupp Business Area Materials Services, and ITP, the Spanish aero engine components manufacturer based in Zamudio, have agreed on a strategic co-operation.

Langley Alloys shifts to new premises in Singapore

Langley Alloys South East Asia, recently relocated to 9B Jalan Ampas, Singapore, as part of its strategic development plan. The company is expanding its operations rapidly in South East Asia and has now installed cutting facilities to support local customers.

Chinese company extends lance tube life to 1 year

Yong Steel Group, an iron and steel producer in China, has managed to extend the service life of its pulverised coal injection (PCI) lance tubes – one of the most important blast furnace components – from one month to one year by replacing standard grade tubing with Sandvik 253 MA. Sandvik 253 MA is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel that is designed for excellent high temperature oxidation resistance and carburisation corrosion resistance and good high temperature strength.

Nickel alloys or Ni-Hard find extensive use in a wide range of applications across various industries due to their desirable properties. Some common applications include:

Aerospace Industry: Nickel alloys are utilized in aircraft engines, gas turbines, and other aerospace components due to their high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties.

Chemical Processing: Nickel alloys are well-suited for chemical plants where they are used in reactors, heat exchangers, piping systems, and valves. Their exceptional resistance to corrosion and high-temperature environments make them ideal for handling corrosive chemicals and acids.

Oil and Gas Industry: Nickel alloys are crucial in this industry for applications such as oil well drilling tools, valves, pumps, and tubing. Their resistance to corrosion, high strength, and ability to withstand harsh environments make them suitable for offshore and onshore operations.

Power Generation: Nickel alloys are used in power plants, particularly in turbines, generators, and heat exchangers. Their high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance make them ideal for efficient energy production.

Medical Industry: Nickel alloys find applications in medical devices such as implants, surgical instruments, and dental equipment. They offer biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength necessary for medical applications.

Automotive Industry: Nickel alloys are employed in exhaust systems, catalytic converters, and engine components due to their high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance.

Marine Industry: Nickel alloys are used in marine applications, including shipbuilding and offshore structures, due to their resistance to seawater corrosion and high strength.

These are just a few examples, and nickel alloys have numerous other applications in fields such as desalination, food processing, nuclear power, and more.
