Latin Resources acquired the Borborema iron ore project from Rio Tinto Exploration, Brazil (Rio Tinto Desenvolvimentos Minerais).

The company said the acquisition was in line with its stated strategy and objectives of identifying Iron ore projects in South America if the opportunity arose and if the project identified was close to port and infrastructure.

ArcelorMittal Liberia shipped 3Mt of iron ore between January and August 2013, almost doubling last year’s figures for the same period. The most recent monthly shipments figures for July 2013 show that production tripled last month compared with July 2012.

Australian iron ore miner has boosted shipments to record levels via the sale of low grade iron ore which would have once been tossed on the rubbish heap. A gap in the market for lower grade ore has emerged due to the suspension of production in India.

In a bid to explore potential iron ore assets for acquisition by state-run companies, India will be sending a high-level delegation to Brazil for the second time in three months.

US-flag ships working on the Great Lakes carried less cargo in 2012 compared to 2011 and compared to the five-year average, according to an annual report.  Great Lakes freighters carried 89.5 million tons of the dry-bulk cargo last year, down 4.6% from 2011 and down 1.5% from the five-year average, according to the Ohio-based Lake Carriers’ Association. The five-year average is 90.8 million tons.  Iron ore shipments dropped 4.3% from 2011.

Australia's Crusader Resources plans to start production at its Posse iron ore project in Brazil in 2013 after it has received an operating license from local authorities.

The license allows the production of 300,000mt/year of run-of-mine ore using dry beneficiation.

Australian miner Atlas Iron Limited has announced that production has commenced at its third Pilbara iron ore mine, Mt. Dove, representing a key stepping stone towards achieving its near-term production target of 12 million mt per year.

Australia-based iron-ore producer Gindalbie Metals Limited (Gindalbie) has announced that it has shipped the first magnetite concentrate cargo from its Karara iron ore project in Western Australia via Karara Export Terminal in Geraldton.

SAIL will begin producing iron ore from the Chiria mines in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand by 2014. The company is set to finalize an investment roadmap for the project after completion of the detailed project report next month.

Sesa Goa has signed an agreement with Elenilto Minerals & Mining LLC to acquire a 51% stake in Elenilto's wholly-owned subsidiary Western Cluster Ltd, Liberia (WCL) for a cash consideration of USD 90 million. Situated in the western part of Liberia with an estimated reserve
