Stainless preserves German history

One thousand years of German history is stored 400m below ground in the Barbarastollen tunnel in Germany. 881 million records are stored in 1450 stainless steel containers to ensure preservation. The containers are manufactured by Ucon and supplied by ThyssenKrupp. The vault is the only cultural property in Germany under the protection of the Hague Convention. Preconditioned to create a dust and pollutant free microclimate, the containers have 35% relative humidity and a temperature of 10°C. These conditions, along with the closure technology that uses a copper ring to create an airtight seal, ensure that the film material can be stored without loss of quality for 500 years.
