SSC to acquire plant in Iwate Prefecture

After deciding to advance into Iwate Prefecture, SSC Co., Ltd. will acquire a new plant. SSC is a coil center, owned and operated by Kanpoh Steel Co., Ltd., Sumitomo Metal Industries (Sumitomo Metals), Sumitomo Corporation, and Sumikin Bussan Corporation. Toyota Motor Corporation is encouraging its Keiretsu auto engine and auto body manufacturers to advance into the Tohoku region which is regarded as Toyota’s third domestic manufacturing base. As a result of this move, many component makers have already moved into the area. Against this backdrop, SSC will construct a new coil center in Iwate Prefecture with the goal to establish a steel sheet processing base that improves delivery times, decreases transportation costs, and stabilizes supply of steel sheet to component makers. In doing so, SSC will promote business and help to reconstruct the Tohoku region. The new coil center, scheduled to begin operation in June 2012, will feature one slitter with a processing capacity of 7000 tons/month.
