Skills Training Program for women launched in India

Sandvik Materials Technology in India has initiated a new Skills Training Program for women in underserved urban communities. The program was officially launched on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2021 and is aimed at equipping women to set up home based business and achieve economic empowerment.

The name of the project “Atmanirbharata” is the word for “self-reliance” in Hindi. The program is designed to train women in entrepreneurship, income generation and vocational training to enable them to contribute to their family income while staying home.

The pandemic has had an adverse effect and many families have lost their jobs, in the urban community of Bhosari near the city of Pune. In the community many women have very little or no access to education, jobs or skills for them to make a living. The program will work with 120 women from families of low incomes, in the age group 18-50 and include single mothers, domestic workers and young girls. By skilling and training women to start their own home-based businesses, they will be able to earn a living and contribute to their family income.
