Singapore has recently decided to build a fifth desalination plant on the Jurong Island in order to battle the negative effects of climate changes. The new plant will have the capacity to produce 30 million gallons of water per day, and the National Water Agency is also exploring the feasibility of co-locating the desalination plant next to an existing power plant: this could help to supply energy needed to run the desalination plant. Currently Singapore imports half its water supply from Malaysia, but with this new plant it will be able to satisfy 85 per cent of its water needs.
